The race is on to roll out free WiFi in major cities, but the challenge remains financing the project. Failing the success of big budget corporates (i.e. Google), AnchorFree (a Sunnyvale, California based company) has introduced a free WiFi wholesale model that will allow bricks and mortar merchants and retailers to offer the service to patrons for free.

The premise behind the model is that users of the WiFi service will be presented with banner ads or video ads before their free internet experience. With the growth in WiFi enabled mobile devices, there is definitely an increasing demand for free hotspots, but will users put up with unsolicited advertising...

If the advertising is right before i get free wifi - heck i guess i can live with it :)

Where this will be succesful is if the advertising is, as the article said - targetted to the network.  Even more useful would be local advertising opportunities -  i'd actually pay attention to an ad, even 2-3 when hooking into a hotel netwrok if it were for a local attraction, theater or restaurant - i can see some of the big restaurants getting in on this: "hey, after you leave your wonderful (insert hotel name here) room  -why not come and eat with us - and have 10% off the bill"

That sort of localized targetted marketing could be pretty effective i think.  many's the time i've been in an airport - or hotel and asked "where should i eat? What should i see" etc ...
