Totally agree with you!

I joined facebook, partly to assess its potential for product marketing, but mainly BC most of my Ex-pat friends were on there. In the space of just a few weeks i was so fed up with the pokes, super walls, this app, that app and suchlike that i hardly go back there these days. moreso after i found out about the whole beacon shebang.  I'm going back to good old IM i think :)
- Havent completely written it off for marketing purposes - but now i'm going to wait and see what the fallout is from "beacongate" before making any recommendations one way or other.

I have no interest in joining facebook but Beacon would be enough to make me drop it completely if I had joined. There's No Way I'd use a service that broadcast my purchases like that. It's barely enough now that they've let people opt out completely. I wouldn't trust them anymore and it proves that they're not about community or user-friendliness but just about gathering personal information and sacrificing it for their own profit.
