While Wikipedia is the creation of armies of creators working in anonymity or obscurity, Knol--the name means "unit of knowledge" will spotlight individual authors, let them retain ownership of their content, and divvy up any advertising revenue with them.

Seth Godin remarked that Knol also competes with Squidoo, letting authors elaborate on any topic of their choice and sharing the ad revenue with them, while donating some to charity also.
