According to TechCrunch, Microsoft has walked away from the Yahoo! deal.

Quote: A final meeting occurred today at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, between Jerry Yang and David Filo from Yahoo, and Kevin Johnson and Steve Ballmer from Microsoft. At that meeting, Yahoo said the lowest price they could accept was $37/share. Microsoft reportedly went as high as $33/share. Yang and Filo returned to California shortly after the meeting, and Yang then had a subsequent phone conversation with Ballmer. At that time Ballmer withdrew the offer.

So I wonder what is the next move? From what I have read ...

"Microsoft says can achieve goals without yahoo"

and Yahoo is open to alternative offers ...AOL? meanwhile happy to let google run its advertising

For the sake of advertisers I hope Microsoft can deliver a viable alternative - it is starting to look a lot like a monopoly which can't be good for advertisers.
