I have a client that is using a 301 redirect to catch all pages that normally would be 404. I know this used to be a bad idea - even causing dupe content problems when spiders end up indexing the homepage many times... I have always told people to use a custom 404 with a sitemap on it... But they seem to love the 301.... Are custom 404's still good practice vs a 301? Or has it become a non-issue? | ||

October 2007 A dude I once worked with said to go with a custom 404. He had a crazy 'stache...so he must know what he is talking about.

October 2007 I would always go with the 404, as 301s are only for permanently moved pages.
Nice question though, I never really stopped to think of why people would use 301s for this. Reply

October 2007 I used to do a 301 but now use a 404. I typically recommend clients go the custom 404 route.

October 2007 I'm also interested in this. I have jotted this down as something I need to fix but haven't figured out how I want to do it and am very interested in recommendations.

October 2007 this sounds like a great question to go in the http://www.gooruze.com/groups/593/
Personally, I would just go with a custom 404 page. Reply
