I just read Andy Beard's article on Duplicate content, whilst he said that is was good to spread your articles far and wide, not link attributing back to the actual home of your article would pull down you google ranking for that article because of duplicate content out there on the web. Is this true and if so, how do we remind re-publishers of articles to bookmark back to the home of the article in the first place? (maybe add some copy to remind authors?)

Hi, Rachel. We do a lot of content re-purposing on the web. We'll be moving to other media as well, but for the web, we've found that the duplicate content penalties are real, but easily avoided with some work.

If it's your site in question both times, you certainly need to do the obvious things like change your title tags and descriptions.  More important, though, is to take the concept and apply it to the specific niche.

A good example of this is one we're working on right now with our homeschooling and financial publishers.  The financial publisher will be posting a poll to test personal finance knowledge.  Ordinarily, she would get a good essay, maybe even a press release, out of the data.  The poll can also go viral.

To cross-pollinate the sites, the education side will be creating personal finance lesson plans based on the deficiencies found in adult visitors on the finance site.   That way she also gets an essay, but more importantly for her, live and current subject matter for a lesson plan which is then sold as part of her efforts as a download for homeschooling parents.

I think the critical element is to do more than rewrite and toss a new title tag up top.

There is a good writeup with duplicate content basics from a 2006 show worth reviewing.  The advice is still very relevant.

Or simply add a line at the bottom of your article, stating do not remove if republished elsewhere, that has a link to itself.

Yes, duplicate content gets a negative score from Google. That's why you need to rewrite your PLR articles, so they look unique. Then you can post them anywhere.
