Google have announced that they have changed the way that they look upon websites which use link directories and link farms. They also predict that some websites may loose their page rank because of the new Google update. Will this effect sites using links legitimately?

What's the best stratedgy for linking?

I don't believe Google have changed the way they look at websites using link farms...They've frowned upon link farms for a while.

The difference is they are now targeting paid links more actively. What it comes down to is the purpose of the links. They are trying to stop sites from buying and selling links to manipulate their rankings - which will always be a challenge - just look at the uproar that has started over the PageRank punishment of several high profile sites.

If you're looking to improve your ranking through linking building - then the strategy is simple (the execution less so).

1. Always target RELEVANCE
2. Build links naturally
3. Develop your links gradually and sustainably
4. Drive link growth through valuable content and contribution

There's many tactics for effectively building links in a Google friendly manner: Here's a few Gooruze articles for some solid ideas -

The sites I monitor that lost 2+ TBPR are actually doing better in rankings then ever before. I am convinced TBPR is just one big waste of a metric now a days. Don't fret over it.
