I recently came across a blog that was using many of my posts and those of other bloggers I know, word for word. He only changed the author's name but nothing else. The site appears to be nothing but these posts and Google Adsense. What should be done? I am not sure if the other bloggers know this is occurring, since I just found it myself. What is considered a reasonable use of one's post? Thanks | ||

November 2007 I would drop it. Sites like this are like cockroaches. If you see one, there are still thousands in the walls. Not much you can do.

November 2007 Hi localbiz, Copyright infringement is definitely a growing problem because it is so easy to "steal" online material and it can be a long time before anyone notices. Historically, copyright infringement laws are strongly in favor of the person making the claim, which would be you as the owner of the copyrighted material. If you find a site that is using your content without authorization, either text or photos, send a "cease and desist" letter to the site, as well as copying all communications to the web developer/ web host. Contact them in good faith and ask them to remove the material. This is often effective on its own. If the infringed material is not removed, step two would be to invoke the DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) takedown act. DMCA is designed to be easy, for the owner of copyrighted material to be able to invoke it without an attorney. The claim must be filed with the offending site's online services provider, who will remove the material and give the infringer a chance to respond. This most often takes care of the problem, but if not retain an attorney to take it to the next level. Good luck!

November 2007 Thanks for the note. I did some checking and it appears the web site is hosting in the Urkraine and I did an emaill associated with the domain name. I also send Google a spam note because the site has Adsense all over it. I think I might contact some of the other bloggers too. Thanks Reply

November 2007 it's always a challenge when people copy your content. While its almost a compliment that they feel your content is worthy of duplication - when they remove any credit to you (the original author) - the compliment is soured.
I think it'll be difficult to get any action out of the Ukraine (especially considering legislation such as the DMCA is not upheld outside the US)...i'd be interested to know how you get on. Reply
