Basic assumption - Google serves up AdSense ads that match the content of the page.

Next assumption -  if AdSense ads appear that actually aren't relevant to the content, then the content needs to be rewritten.

Does that mean that a valid quick check of the SEO of written content is to insert AdSense code and see what ads get displayed?

James - i think it could be part of the mix, i wouldn't place too much weight on the results though.
I think adense just looks at the content on your site, but the google algorithm takes into account far more when working out what your page is about for the search engine results.

That's my guess anyway, but maybe they do use all their technology on adsense pages also? would love to hear what other people think?

That's the basic question - does  AdSense interpret the topic of a page the same way as Google search?

If so, could be a handy rule of thumb validation of content. Sounds too good to be true and yes, does ignore anything else in the algorithm.

Use any of the freely available key word density checking tools.

That is a better way of determinng the context of your site - and probably faster as well!

Keyword checkers have a weakness: they don't indicate what the search engine "thinks" the page is about.

Not in the same way the AdSense is supposed to, according to the Google spiel: "...crawls the content of your pages and delivers ads that are relevant to your audience and your site content..."

Agree James that density checkers do not understand context of the page.

But like any good analysis tool, it is only as good as the person intrepreting the data.  That is why your common sense has to come into it and not just blindly following what the tool spits out.

A review of the search engine keyphrases (especially the multi word keyphrases) combined with the keyword density should give you a pretty good idea how the SEs are interpreting your site's context.

Thanks Warren, and I've realised the other big (and obvious) hole in my theory. AdSense can only serve up a relevant ad if there's one to be served up. If there isn't I assume it looks for the next best thing - and serves up ads that relate to words and phrases that are on the page, but aren't what the page is about.

That is a valid point you are bringing up.

The cynical side of me now start to wonder.

Consider a page which the contextual meaning could be intrepreted both ways.  Meaning 1 has a lower average CPC than Meaning 2.  Which set of Adsense would get a run on that page?

Can you actually figure out the CPC - or at least make an informed judgement about the relative CPC of two ads?

If you'd like to do an experiment, I've got plenty of pages in a glossary on my site that weren't written with SEO in mind, so their meaning to AdSense is fuzzy. That's what got me thinking about this in the first place.

Be happy to put AdSense up an a few glossary pages for a few days so you can observe the results.  Won't leave them there forever because irrelevant AdSense ads just look tacky.

If the experiment is of interest let me know and I'll set the ads up.
