I would like to hear how many of you use paid search engines "content network" and if it is successful for you.  I found this case study on Googles blog where a search agency uses it for there clients successfully.

I personally know of one person (Dan) that is having success with it.  I know it depends on the verticle, but I have been in literally over 200 paid search accounts and would say maybe 2 accounts were generting a positive ROI from the content network.  They were coupon sites.

Anyone else?  Please post which industry you are in as well.

Rarely does content network work for me, especially with ecommerce. However, I have had some success with lead gen sites. The good results really followed lengthy negative keyword research and a close eye on the URLs the ads were being served. I agree, it's a tough avenue, but for some verticals it seem to work quite well.

I would like to hear others experience as well.  We may find a pattern of verticles or types of sites (ex. lead gens) that work in content network.

The key is to find the sweet spot of clicks/cost. Also...move them out of the campaigns and give them their own..and ten run one (with low bid) with just text ads...then one with image ad (a bit higher). The image ads with the higher bids will take over complete ad sections. I do this and keep that budget low. More of  a branding effort. (works well on site targeted campaigns too).

Questions....

That is one thing I have not tried is the image ads.  I will give it another try, but it is going to be hard to convince me content network is worth it, but for a select few.

BTW- for those that dont know:

1. if you have a paid search account, when you create a campaign, you are in the content network by default.

2. You can shut content network off or set different cpc amounts for keywords in the content network
