Hey Gooruze,

I have been asked by someone to answer the following questions. Wondering if I could seek some of your opinions/wisdom on the questions below?...

I‘m working on a feature article for ######## that I was hoping you might be able to assist with. It’s looking at how companies can engage with and exploit Web 2.0 technologies for promoting their brands, products and services.

  1. What good examples have you seen of an existing brand working with web 2.0 technologies (blogs, podcasts, etc), or with social media portals (MySpace, Facebook, etc).
  2. What are the rules in getting such engagements right?
  3. Where do companies commonly go wrong?
  4. What examples have you seen of engagements that have run off the rails?
  5. The phenomenon of corporate blogging seems to have run aground  - I’m not aware of too many new entrants. Is this the case – and if so, why?

1. What good examples have you seen of an existing brand working with web 2.0 technologies (blogs, podcasts, etc), or with social media portals (MySpace, Facebook, etc):

Dell and Quicken are both doing a good job of blogging and building communities:
- Dell community for R&D and building loyalty - ideastorm
- Quicken blog (whatsthediff) and community (QuickBooks community)

In terms of facebook - Apple's use of iLike app & community for itunes integration is stellar!
MySpace is all about the music - it was the first time the archaic music industry stood up and really paid attention to web 2.0

2. What are the rules in getting such engagements right?
- innovation
- honesty
- transparency
- interaction

3. Where do companies commonly go wrong?
they don't understand web 2.0 is about engagement - and try to use the mechanism as another mass marketing exercise - just look at the political campaigns.

4. Where do companies commonly go wrong?
can't think of any recent examples - but the wal-mart blog and chevy tahoe are some prime examples.

5. The phenomenon of corporate blogging seems to have run aground  - I’m not aware of too many new entrants. Is this the case – and if so, why?
not sure it's run aground....just think that blogging has reached critical mass and therefore less publicity is given to corporates that engage in blogging...unfortunately many corporates still haven't captured the essence of web 2.0 and in many instances - their blogs aren't worth mentioning

3.) I think the biggest mistake companies make is thinking it's all about them (the company), when in reality it's all about the community. You know -- they arrive on Facebook or wherever with this "Aren't you glad we're here?" approach.

5.) I don't think it's run aground, but I do think it's less of a novelty and so when another company launches a blog, it's like ... big deal.
