Hey guys, It's the newbie here. I have a quick question about content. From my experience I have always been told that content is king and a good rule of thumb is to have anywhere from 250-500 words on a page. I am working for an online retail company and am looking at other people's sites and it looks like no one is using any text on their pages. It's all images and internal text links. Do text links count as text on a page? If that's the case should we try to use keywords in our text links to help optimize the page?

December 2007 Ah yes content is king!
I'm going to try to be very concise so you can avoid any overstated info. Yes text counts as text when it comes to total words on your site. The anchor text (text in a link) is weighted more because it should contribute to the "theme" of your website. So yes use keywords in your text links when it makes sense. ex/ If you are selling Blue Widgets and it's a text link for your About Us page err on the side of Usability so the person knows where they are clicking through to. If it is a text link for your Holiday Gifts then using "Holiday Blue Widgets" would be fine. Keep reading if you want more :) ....... The key to retail websites is information architecture and a directory structure that supports an overall theme for your site as well as page-specific theming. It's important that you not only have your Google sitemap updated with all of your pages, but also to ensure that spiders can hit every page and index them. Page Saturation will only put your products in front of likely consumers are who in the research/comparison stages of the buying cycle. Happy holidays! Reply
