I think the idea of running your own social networking site from a provider such as Ning is great and there's some potential there for those with good ideas. The question is how to set up your own social networking site and make it work for you, be that as a driver into another product or as a online marketing/ direct revenue source itself. Is anyone else running a Ning (or other provider) social networking site? What's your experience with it, is there leverage or direct potential from an online marketing perspective? | ||

December 2007 I don't have much experience with Ning, but I asked a similar question on my blog recently. I only got one answer, but it's probably worth checking out. Here's an excerpt:
"For a business, looking to build a social network that they can make part of their business flows long term, Ning is a dead-end relationship. As far as I can tell, you never own your users. You can’t export them. You can’t see their activity on the site. You can’t extend their profiles. You basically don’t have access to them. Ning does. Ning owns them. They have a Ning account, not a (your company) account or other account (OpenID) that your company can work with." Reply
