I'm trying to get an idea of what third party numbers to use in marketing materials targeting advertisers.  The objective, as with any marketing material, is to put a company in the best light.  I would love to have the Gooruze community answer the following two survey questions (I said mini, right?).  I'm particularly interested in those that represents advertising brands.

---Questions---

According to these statements, which company do you think has more traffic:

  • Company A has 20 million unique visitors a month (source: Web analytics system)
  • Company B has 15 million unique visitors a month (source: Comscore)

If you had to guess how important these sites are, how would you rank them:

  • Company D: The top independent news site according to Alexa’s rankings
  • Company E: The 9th most popular news site according to Comscores
  • Company F: is the third post popular independent news site according to Compete

I work for a vertical search engine, so I'm in the advertising segment.

I recently had to go through this myself regarding our monthly uniques - Quantcast said one thing, our analytics said something else.  We're not quantified, but the Quantcast number was higher.

I would have to say, in response to your first question, that company A has more traffic.  For question 2, I would rank them as such:
1) E
2) F
3) D

I don't really trust Alexa, since their stats rely solely on a toolbar - the sample is not large enough. Compete gets theirs from a toolbar as well, but they also use data from other sources like ISPs and opt-in panels.
