I'm looking at starting to use Adsense, but I'm worried about fitting the ads in around the design of the site - I don't want to 'cheapen' the look of it, or to distract from the content. I want to check out how others have approached this. Does anyone know of sites that do this really successfully? Thanks! | ||

January 17th Here's a site I spotted a long time ago that looks pretty nice if you ignore the "ebay" plug at the bottom of the content...err and maybe eliminate the adsense bar at the top. Really, I just like the one in the content.

Too out there, and people leave. putting at the bottom or on a sidebar though will make people not see it. I personally favor wrapping it in a black border, keeping the color scheme the same as the site, and putting a block of it in the text like he did. It's visible, but not obnoxious. Reply

January 18th Shady, out of curiosity, have you always been that well blended? I was doing many similar things and at a conference last year, received multiple suggestions about our ad network pages that all had the same theme: "you're blending it TOO much."
We also received suggestions for a placement between the mast and content, something we had never done, but we tested. Both the leaderboard before the content and the skyscraper that was not as well blended or was blended but had a border consistently outperformed the "perfectly blended" ads. Also, with Google switching the AdSense clickable area to the hyperlink, I wonder if there is more of an uptake by simply testing a traditional hyperlink blue on your blended, inset ads? I know that might seem jarring at first, but if the page is simply designed to generate ad revenue, I think you want to jar folks a little. Not "punch the monkey and win an iPod" jarring, but a more pronounced use of color or borders. George Reply

January 20th Well, I prefer blending them in because when design a site, I don't like adsense coming in and mucking up the overall feel. I've gotten ok conversions, but I may switch over soon to something more obvious to get a test run down.
but it won't look as good, I'm sure. We'll see! Reply

January 21st You're a brave soul. As soon as I get enough data to conclude a test, I'm off to the next one. My partner says spreadsheets talk to me. My wife says I answer them!

January 18th I've looked at the site you suggest and it's quite subtle, although the ads don't line up horizontally with the text (this would bug me if I was designing it). I've read that putting a block in amongst the content is one of the most successful formats for adsense - maybe I'll try this? I'm very wary of going too far with it... Thanks for your reply! Reply
