Many of the Gooruze pages are coming up with a PageRank of 4, eg: news, Q&A and Articles pages, however the homepage www.gooruze.com, is still showing a zero.

I was under the impression that if sub-pages have a PR of 4, this should be passed onto the homepage. The homepage has a heap of incoming links, so can you think of any reason why its still showing a zero ?

Keep in mind that toolbar PR is prone to errors. You'll often see what I call "ghost PR."

What happens is that you go from a page with a PR of say 5, to a page with zero PR. The toolbar doesn't catch-up and so it stays at 5/10--giving the illusion of PR. That could be happening here.

I use the SearchStatus plugin as it appears to be far more accurate in showing PR - http://www.quirk.biz/searchstatus/

Hey Andy,

I use the SearchStatus plugin too and have checked the rank of those pages across multiple "check pagerank" sites - so I dont thikn its just an error with the Google toolbar.

Weird...

Interesting you see the news page with a PR of 4 - it shows as zero for me. But you're right, the Q&A and Articles pages both with PR of 4.

PR is not just about the volume of inbound links, but also looks at the quality of the inbound links. Its likely that there are more specific (and therefore relevant) links pointing into the discussion areas (like Articles, Q&A, news etc) of the Gooruze site as these are the areas where the large volume of high quality content are located on the Gooruze site.

Needless to say there is a good run through of PageRank on Wikipedia.

Hi Matt,

I'm not an expert on Google PR, but it is (or possibly better stated now, was) my understanding that sub-pages receive a PR value from their superior pages (i.e. homepage), therefore the scenario you've outlined seems impossible.  However, Google could be applying a higher PR value to sub pages if more relavent links (or contextual links) are going to News, Questions, or Q&A pages than to the home page and it deems these pages to have more valuable content.

I've seen within my company's own site a situation where dynamic content, like that found on the gooruze.com homepage, was actually rated lower than static content.  Since the sub pages contain valuable content which isn't being altered as frequently and potentially could have more inbound links than the homepage it is fair to hypothosize that you could be experiencing a similar situation.  However this is an apples to oranges comparison and doesn't explain the Google PR 0 on your homepage.  In my example both the dynamic and static pages were sub-pages and gathered much of their Google PR from our homepage.
