As many of you know, G will not allow redirects as display URLs beginning April 1st. I like to do this. Purchase URL... and just 301 at the site. This way I get to use in display url, while avoiding duplicate content issues. I would like to maintain this but I need to make a change in the set-up. Has anybody done this yet? Any advice? Will parking create a duplicate content situation? Should I have any concerns reversing a 301 and then parking? | ||

February 22nd If you are talking about the display and destination url going to yoururl.com and then having that landing page or domain 301 to another site, google will disapprove the ad. Google will still allow redirects in ads for tracking purposes Display URL: www.google.com/adwords Reply

February 22nd Are you talking about the upcoming Adwords change. Or is this across the board... If thats the case I wasn't aware of that.

February 23rd Al thanks... that is my problem. I have display urls that are 301 redirected to the site. I would like to keep the display url but I'll have to make some change in light of the new policy.
Will I have any problems, do you think, if I change that 301 redirect to a parked domain? Do you think that will allow me to maintain essentially the same set up I have now? Should I be worried about causing duplicate content issues for the site? The other choice I have is to create a mirrored site on that domain and no-index it? Hoping to get some thoughts? Reply

February 23rd I guess I am not fully understanding the redirects. If you are doing something other than the example I gave earlier (which is allowed) can you give a similar example (using fake urls) of what your display url path is right now?

February 23rd thanks for the help Al. Here is an example of what I'm doing.
Let's say the the site's actual url is: www.JoeAttorney.com But in the adwords campaign for a local search you want the display url to be: www.NewYorkAttorney.com (just an example) What I did was purchase a url with www.GeographyKeyword.com , then pointed it at the site with a 301, so I could use it as the display url. As you correctly pointed out above, Google will no longer allow this (April 1st, 2008). I want to keep the www.GeographyKeyword.com as the display url. And I need a new strategy because of the upcoming policy change. I am hoping for recommendations. Thanks again Al, for continuing to ask for clarification. I had a difficult time framing the question. Reply

February 23rd That's weird. I added a comment, clicked edit and it got deleted?? anyway, here is the comment again Hmmm... I am not sure how you are going to be able to do that? I do not think Google will allow the landing page to be 301'd to a different url. when they check the landing page, they will most likely decline the ad or you will get some ridiculous min bid like $10. according to google, http://adwords.blogspot.com/2008/02/update-to-display-url-policy.html an altermative would be for you to put www.joeattorney.com/New-York as your display url. if the landing page is www.joeattorney.com it should get approved. Also, dont forget to geo-target. The ad will say New York under it as well. https://adwords.google.com/select/targeting.html and get added on google maps local Reply

February 23rd It worked great Al. Quality scores that are "Great" with minimum bids of .04 and a lot of double-digit CTR's. That's why I want to keep it.
Your suggestion of putting the geography after the domain is a good one. I might be able to make it work, I'll give it a try. But I'm still wondering if I can find a way to make it work without jeopardizing the site's organic ranking by maybe parking the domain (afraid of dupe content, should I be?) instead of 301ing which won't be allowed as you pointed out starting next month. I couldn't make geo-targeting work in this campaign. The area is Bergen County NJ. I put that phrase (bergen county NJ) into Google Trends and the number 1 city returned wasn't even IN Bergen County, so I said that's it and gave up on it. I've made it work for other counties (obviously by selecting all the cities within them) but not Bergen. A lot depends on where the DSL and cable companies offices are... imho. I expect it to get better though. Reply

February 25th Hi LocalHound. You don't need to use a 301 redirect at all. Let the NewYorkAttorney.com domain expire, and focus on the main site. Use geographic subdomains or subdirectories as your Display URL's.
For your Display URL use: "JoeAttorney.com/New-York" or "NewYork.JoeAttorney.com" For your Destination URL use: JoeAttorney.com The directory "New York" can be non-existent. It is only used for "display" purposes within Adwords. Test using a subdomain (named after your keyword) instead of a subdirectory. Depending on your market, you can often get higher CTR by using a subdomain instead of a subdirectory. Test "joeattorney.com/NewYork" against "NewYork.JoeAttorney.com" for your Display URL. See which one gets a higher CTR. Reply
