Hi! I'm curious to learn more about how best to try to sell products thru online communities. My partners and I have invented a new product that could best be described as a 'pool blanket'. It works pretty much the same as a traditional inflatable or foam pool float. The key USP is a patented new material that is super thin and super buoyant. The net result is that in water it behaves like a float but it's more comfortable (as it's thinner and moulds with your body). When out of the pool, it rolls up or folds up like a towel or a blanket. Easy to use. Easy to store. It also looks really cool - asthetically I mean. We kinda see it as a lifestyle product. Whilst we are exploring more traditional distribution channels, we really want to try to make it a bit of a cult thing. So, we're thinking of how we can spread the word through online communities. Upload a video of it in use on YouTube, create a MySpace page, etc etc. Can anyone offer any tips/tricks/suggestions or even some case studies/examples of products/companies that have successfully 'exploited' online communites in this way? | ||

September 14th It is doable. When I used to work for the company that owns Gooruze, I employed a few different new media marketing/social media marketing strategies which actually did result in people calling in and they actually bought services from us. I don't really know much about pool blankets though, but I would probably go and search for forums about pools or DIY/Gardening/Houses or something and spread the word. You could also try approaching Bloggers to see if they can write something about it - in exchange for a 'pool blanket'. It just depends what you want to do and what is feasible for your company.
