Hi all, I'I have an email I am sending out that got too many spam replies. I don't think its the content, but I am trying to narrow down if it is something in the code (I suspect the link ID code) or if it is my list (purchasers from our website where it is ONLY opt-out thur email campaign -- I know -- horrible, but I can't change that at the moment). I am looking for a resource who can charge by the hour to do a mini-eval on my email. I ran the email through an online checker to guage spamminess, but would like an actual person. Most consultants I think want a retainer, or at least 4-hour project. Any ideas? | ||

February 2009 Kathryn, I'll be happy to look at it for you too (no charge) Keep in mind there are endless reasons why email gets bounced as spam, and for a many of them there''s not much we as marekters can do about it. (EG: Overzealous and paranoid company IT managers for one.) ANyway, send me the email and I'll have quick squiz.

March 2009 Just wanted to follow up -- Mark (silk merchant) was INCREDIBLY helpful and detailed in his analysis of my email. I don't want to reprint without his permission, but I found his advice very knowledgeable and thorough. Some key take aways -- use div not table in code and/or style sheets, balance text/images when possible, monitor bounce frequency and clean list often. Plus, this particular email had a TON of links with tracking code -- promoting about 40 universities -- which may have been the culprit. Reply

March 2009 Hey Kathy, yeh I thought after I wrote to you that I should make it into an article or a tute. (Incredibly I still have more to say.) Anyway, let me collect my thoughts and re-order the points I made for you so that flow better, and I'll post it here soon. In the menatime, for anyone else reading this, let me reiterate one key point: Test everything and then watch what happens. Then make changes to see if they improve things. Back Soon Mark

February 2009 I can have look. Depending on the length and depth of it I don't think I would even charge. Doesn't sound like a monstrocity of a project. Reply

February 2009 Awesome! Thank you! I will send it to you. I use MailChimp to distribute -- I had their onsite spam checker ($10 fee per email which does a more robust spam report than the usual gloss over ones) and it passed the test. A rep there said characters in the code would not automatically put in someone's spam folder, but I talked with a consultant who thought the & character (which I use for link ids) might trigger a spam report. Thank you thank you thank you. I'll email now. Reply
