I want to register our sites on various directories but some of them require a reciprocal link on our site, which I don't want to accomodate. But these sites have links to companies like Dell, Apple and Zappos, which I can't believe have reciprocal links. Anyone have an explanation or a work around? Create a separate page under our domain, that doesn't have links from our site?

create a sub page just for them and provide the links...it shouldn't interfere with your active pages

Hi

I would say that they simply added such famous and popular brands in their directory to give them(the directory) a bit of credibility to their "customer" (you for example).

Indeed you see that famous brand are in the directory and then think that you should be in there too because they seem relevant.

But I don't think directories asking for reciprocal links are good inbound links.

that's my opinion. Anyone else?

Reciprocal links don't work anymore. Google doesn't consider the reciprocal links and even link chains like A has a link for B, И has a link for C, C has a link for A.

It's much more beneficial to have links from social networks.
